Third Week

Reading Class (third week).

Hello everyone!
I want to share with you about wednesday class. On wednesday, I observed a reading class developed by Astrid, Daniel and Xenia, they used family members and some new word such as “music, vacation, house, dinner, etc” as vocabulary in their text. To start, I liked that teachers explained all the vocabulary in the context; they asked to kids if they knew about the new words, and students gave some probable answers. Also, I liked their text especially because it was short, but with a clear main idea, and I liked the activity on the papers under the desk, that activity involved the majority of students in an active way and that was very good. They were the first group to develop a reading class and that is a big challenge, especially because is with children, however, they did a good job.

From my own experience, I know that time plays an important role that is why, we need to be careful with that. In that class maybe they did not notice that, and at the end Xenia had few minutes to develop her activities, it is normal that happens, it was their first class and always the first time in everything is not easy, it is a big challenge but the small details and mistakes we learn more, because we do not forget that anymore, but something that we can do in at a moment like that is avoid doing some activities that are not so important to get out with everyone's time. Another point was when they introduced the vocabulary, it would have been better if they had shown pictures, so that students could remember it easily socializing the words with the picture.

If I have the opportunity to chance something, I would like to improve only a few details, the first would be to focus more on the reading, because the class was about reading and not about vocabulary, I know that all the vocabulary were necessary, but considering that it is only one hour of class, it would have been better if it were less vocabulary in order to be able to distribute the time well. Also, implement more dynamic activities because children learn by doing things and they have a lot of energy and we must take advantage of that.

We are learning and from each experience we learn a little more, that is why I can only congratulate that group.

    1. Hi Estefania!! i know that I was not in that reading class, but I would like to share my opinion with you. I like a part where he mentions that depending on the class that we have to develop, this must be what we have to focus on. For example Astrid, Daniel and Xenia had a reading class, so they had to focus on reading stages not on vocabulary. Moreover, you said that it was their first reading class, so I think that it was a challenge for them. First time is never easy for anyone, but overall they did it.

  2. Hello Estefania!
I hope you have a good day, so I would like to talk about the reading class. First, I share your point of view regarding on development of this group, however I think that vocabulary and reading need to be mixed fifty and fifty percent, not too much to the vocabulary, but we should emphasize on the new words for students also because the reading text have those words, and to avoid any misunderstanding in the reading practice, we need to focus in those stuff. I think this group did a great job because you know that reading is faster than speaking, or vocabulary class, so they took advantage about this. It was clever because they focused in the real need of the students. And that was the reason why they spent about half an hour in the words.

  3. Hello Karla !

I really appreciate your opinion and your observations, I think we have many things that we should improve, and one of them is the time although we had setbacks that made us focus on things that did not correspond but it was our duty to do it , the part of reading and vocabulary are equally important because if you do not focus and you teach them the vocabulary and the meaning of the words at the time you give them the paragraph they will not understand what is there and they are not going to carry out the activities, we have to know how to better distribute time and improve these errors to make a better class, thank you for your opinion karla!

  4. Hello Karla!
I apreciate your blog since is really helpfull for us to read about our classmates performances from others point of view. I liked that you mention that they did explained the new vocabulary which they will be using during the reading task which is something really important for students to have a clear meaning of what they are reading. I agree with your point about the management of time, it is really important for us to know how to handle this because something it might not be enough but it migh also be the other way around and we have more time, for that I consider that we should always be prepared with back up activities in order to avoid that situation, although what you said about omiting activities that might not be too important is also a great solution if we are running out of time. I also agree whit you when you mention about the dinamic activities it is important for us as teacher to do activities in which children could play around since as we know they learn better when playing. Anyways I think that our classmates class was good despite of the inconveniences although there might be some things to improve. Thank you for share your opinion with us.

  5. Hi Karla.
It is difficult to manage time when we present for the first time. I remembered, when I performed my first class, that I was checking my phone every time that I could do it because we needed to perform other activities along the class. I understand the group because maybe they felt nervous when they were at the front, and that could be the main reason why they couldn't manage time better.
I would like to make emphasis on something you wrote above. When Astrid introduced the new words, she didn't use flashcards or any other picture that had a relationship with the meaning of the words. I think that for kids, even for us, it is easier to understand or get familiar with the meaning of the new words by seeing pictures or any other real-life example. I am for sure that by doing this children could understand easily the new vocabulary in order to comprehend the script of the story.

  6. Hello Karla, I really appreciate your opinion on our class. To be honest I agree with you in every point, I really thank the fact that you highlighted some good points, sometimes from our point of view, when we do something we focused on the bad we did. I apreciate that you noticed good things. Also I think that it was challenging for us to develop the first reading class, and we should have focused a little bit more on reading. We are going to take this into account on the next classes. Thank you very much :)
